Safia Elhillo

Safia Elhillo is a Sudanese American poet and the author of Bright Red Fruit (Make Me a World, 2024); Girls that Never Die (One World, 2022); Home Is Not a Country (Make Me a World, 2021); and The January Children (University of Nebraska Press, 2017), winner of the Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets and the Brunel International African Poetry Prize.

The recipient of a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and a Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship, Elhillo is also a Cave Canem Fellow. Her work has been recognized with a California Book Award, an Arab American Book Award, and nominations for the Kirkus Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. She lives in Los Angeles.
